Opel Invited to Return to Torbalı

Torbalı Chamber of Commerce called on Carlos Tavares, CEO of PSA Group writing a letter. Abdulvahap Olgun, Chairman of Torbalı Chamber of Commerce, called for Carlos Tavares, CEO of PSA to return to the district of Torbalı, Izmir province, regarding the plant which has been closed 17 years ago. Opel Turkey was established in 1989 with the investment of 40 million marks. Opel Turkey was third automobile plant following Renault and Tofas in Turkey. In 1990 when the plant was commissioned for production the number of 1,056 automobiles was assembled. Following this year, the automobile production raised by over 6 thousand units. In 1992, the production became 9 thousand units. In 1993, the production of Opel Turkey raised over 12 thousand units. In 1994, the production decreased 6,626 units because of the economic crisis at that time. As for the imported vehicles became 1,802 units. In 1995, these figures became almost the same. The plant, which had capacity utilization of 10 thousand units, shut in the year 2000. Since then the plant was transformed to spar parts depot. Following the sales of German Opel in the structure of General Motors to French Peugeot Citroen Group (PSA), now the plant in the district of Torbalı has come on the agenda. Both the economy experts and representatives of business circles called on Opel to return to Torbalı again. Producing and exporting 10 thousand vehicles at the plant in the district of Torbalı, regarding management change of Opel the voices have been expressed to return. As the decision of Opel is waited curiously, Abdulvahap Olgun, Chairman of Torbalı Chamber of Commerce, taking into consideration of the returning possibility, called on Carlos Tavares writing a letter to him in order to restart the production at the plant in Torbalı. Olgun mentioned that the number of 750 production facilities, of which 54 ones with foreign capital, operate in the district in his letter to Tavares. He said having exports worth $932 million, Torbalı has logistic link with over 100 countries as well as hosting international firms such as Phılıp Morris, Groupe Atlantıc, MSC Group, JTİ, Dr. Oetkher, SFS Intec. As for the preferring reason of foreign firms, Olgun said; “Our city has highway connection. In addition the city takes place of high speed train-line. Torbalı located at a place 25 kilometers to Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport, 40 kilometers to Izmir Alsancak airport. Our city also has connection to Istanbul-Izmir highway.
