Türkiye’s automotive market is undergoing a significant shift as electric and hybrid vehicles rapidly expand their presence, while the shares of diesel- and LPG-powered cars continue to decline. The country’s registered motor vehicle fleet reached 34.55 million by the end of June.
Türkiye’s transition toward alternative powertrains continues to gain momentum, with electric and hybrid vehicles accounting for a growing share of the country’s passenger car fleet.
According to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat), the total number of registered motor vehicles in Türkiye increased by 6.7% year-on-year, reaching 34.55 million by the end of June, compared with 32.37 million in the same period a year earlier.
Passenger cars represented 51.7% of all registered vehicles. Motorcycles followed with a 21.5% share, while light commercial vehicles accounted for 14.4%, tractors for 6.8%, trucks for 3.1%, minibuses for 1.6%, buses for 0.6% and special-purpose vehicles for 0.3%.
Among the 194,740 vehicles newly registered in June, motorcycles held the largest share at 49.4%, followed by passenger cars at 37.8%.
Hybrid Vehicles Record Rapid Growth
The transformation of Türkiye’s passenger car market has accelerated considerably since 2020.
Gasoline-powered cars increased their share of the passenger car fleet from 24.4% in 2020 to 31%. Their total number rose from 3.20 million to 5.55 million during the period.
Diesel-powered cars remained the largest fuel category by volume, increasing from 5.01 million to 5.74 million. However, their share of the passenger car fleet declined significantly, from 38.3% to 32.1%.
A similar trend was recorded for LPG-powered vehicles. Their number increased from 4.81 million to 5.25 million, while their share of the total passenger car fleet dropped from 36.7% to 29.4%.
Hybrid vehicles posted one of the strongest increases. The number of registered hybrid cars surged from just 33,690 in 2020 to 846,813 by the end of June. As a result, their share of Türkiye’s passenger car fleet climbed from 0.3% to 4.7%.
Electric Car Fleet Reaches Nearly 446,000
Battery-electric vehicles also continued their rapid expansion. The number of registered electric cars reached 445,939 by the end of June, compared with only 2,797 in 2020.
Electric cars now account for 2.5% of Türkiye’s passenger car fleet, highlighting the increasing adoption of battery-powered mobility across the market.
Overall, Türkiye’s passenger car fleet expanded to 17.87 million vehicles by the end of June, up from 13.10 million in 2020.
The figures underline a continuing structural change in Türkiye’s automotive market, as hybrid and electric powertrains gain ground alongside conventional gasoline vehicles, while diesel and LPG gradually lose share.
