Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Awarded

Boeing and Istanbul Technical University (ITU) awarded the most successful unmanned aerial vehicles which were designed by the university students from 7 regions of Turkey. Award winning student teams got the prices from Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Ozkol, Deputy Rector of the ITU and Filiz Hayirli Tepebasi, deputy Director of Boeing for Turkey and North Africa. As the unmanned aerial vehicle, which was designed by the team from Mediterranean University, ranked first; the teams from Fırat University and the Aegean University ranked second and third in the competition.unmanned-aerial2

The winner teams won cash prize of TL10,000; second and third award winning teams got TL5000 and TL2,500 respectively. In her speech Filiz Hayirli Tepebasi said; “The content of our relation with the ITU continues to expand with every passing day. We are proud contributing to provide the most basic devices necessary for an aircraft design and production, and to support qualified labor force directed towards the future of the aviation.” The ITU and Boeing invited the university students from 7 regions of Turkey in the scope of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Design Training and Contest which was financed by Boeing. 32 students were trained by the ITU’s professors, assistants and technical staff expert in aircraft design, aerodynamic and flight control as practical and theoretical during 7 days. At the end of training, the students designed their own mini aircrafts and production of which expenditures were met by the
project. The air vehicles, which were designed and produced by the students, were also displayed by performance flights. Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Ozkol, Deputy Rector of the ITU, said the aim of training and contest which was held by the ITU, one of the most rooted academic institute of Turkey and Boeing for unmanned aerial vehicle design, adding that production is to draw interest of youths in aviation and making a distinctive in the sector. He continued; “Working together of the ITU and Boeing in the various sections of the aviation sector is a good example of university-industry cooperation. I congratulated all teams joined the contest from 7 regions of Turkey and winning teams. I consider continuity of this kind of activities is crucial for the future of the sector.”
