Turkish Automotive Industry Keeps Performance

The Turkish automotive industry kept its successful performance in January-February 2018, according to the Automotive Manufacturers Association (OSD)

Featuring one of the locomotive sectors of our country with its employment and high value-added, the Turkish automotive industry sustains its successful performance in 2018 as well. Closing last year with historical records both in production and exports, the automotive industry protected its same level in the production in the first two months of 2018. According to the data about January and February months from the Automotive Manufacturers Association (OSD), as the total production accomplished in the same level of the previous year with 265 thousand 719 units, but automobile production decreased 6 percent to 179 thousand 481 units over the same period last year. As for the exports compared to the first two months of 2017, the total sector exports decreased 3 percent, the automobile exports decreased 7 percent in the two months of 2018 over the same period of 2017. As for the total domestic market, it kept up with the first two months of 2017 with 84,456 units, nevertheless the automobile market itself tracked upward trend in the first two months this year. Thus, the total automobile domestic market surged 4 percent to 62,512 units in the first two months this year over the same period last year.

Featuring as the roof organization of the sector with its 14 members guides the Turkish automotive industry, the Automotive Manufacturers Association (OSD) posted the data about production, exports and domestic market for the first two months of 2018. Last year achieving historical records in terms of production and exports, the Turkish automotive sector maintained its successful and stable performance in the first two months this year.

In the first two months the sector exported some 214 thousand units

According to the data of the OSD, the total exports of the sector decreased 3 percent to 213,937 units in the first two months this year over the same period previous year. In this period, the Turkish automobile exports decreased 7 percent, but commercial vehicle exports surged 9 percent. The automobile exports were 147,364 units and commercial vehicle exports became 66,573 units. As the total automotive exports increased 19 percent based on dollar regarding parity change, 3 percent based on euro, in the first two months over the same period last year. The total automotive exports accounted for $5,18 billion, the automobile exports realized as $2 billion with 10 percent rise in the first two months this year. Based on Euro the automobile exports decreased 5 percent to 1,645 billion.

14 percent up in commercial vehicle exports! 54 percent constriction in the commercial vehicle market within last 3 years

In the commercial vehicle group, production surged 14 percent, 12 percent in light commercial vehicles, heavy duty commercial vehicles 46 percent respectively in the first two months this year over the same period last year. As the commercial vehicle domestic market decreased 8% and light commercial vehicle 11%; but in the heavy duty commercial vehicles the domestic market surged 19 percent. Meanwhile the market constriction in the heavy duty commercial vehicles became 54 percent in the last 3 years.

In the first two months of 2018, as the total automobile sales in the domestic market increased 4 percent and domestic made automobiles surged 11 percent, the imported automobile sales kept its level same with previous year in this period. Increase in the domestic made automobile market stemmed from the new automobile projects which entered in the force in recent years.
